Suffice it to say that the book serves as a way for Harris to explore and ultimately rationalise the behaviour or his iconic character Hannibal Lector. Lector, we are told, develops into a monster in reaction to the murder and cannibalisation of his younger sister during WWII. Hannibal and his sister are the sole remaining members of his family left after a Stuka bomber and a T-34 explode outside the family hunting lodge killing everyone except the two children.

They are found by a roving band of German Freiwillig volunteers that are now marauding around the country-side eating everything and one they find.

At one point Harris infers that Lector may have participated in the eating of his sister and that it is his attempt to cover-up this memory that leads him to track down and kill the men who ate her. Sadly this is not pursued and we are left with a rather hollow story that seeks to almost exonerate Lector's later behaviour by having his victims be evil men who are deserving of death.

This doesn't jibe with how the character later develops. Lector is a monster that kills and eats a musician in Red Dragon for playing out of tune. Hardly a man worth death in any rational context. There is no way to see how this malevolent creature in the later books and films, the man who attempts to kill Will Graham and his family by directing the attention of a serial killer towards them.

The later Lector is a more traditional violent sociopath. And the Lector in Hannibal Rising is almost heroic. How are we to resolve this incongruity? In Hannibal Rising Inspector Popil correctly identifies Hannibal as not having a human core, of being an "other" who will kill again and again but Harris seems loathe to paint Lector in the colours of his particular pathology.

Harris does, I think, like Hannibal Lector too much. And he is therefore unwilling to cast the character as the inhuman sociopath that he is.

Its telling that in the acknowledgements Harris lists no books on violent behaviour. Nothing similar to Lonnie Athens and his work on the development of violent criminal behavior. After his violent experiences in the war there is nothing that appears to push Hannibal from being a shattered victim of violence to someone who actively participates in it himself. There also appears to be little to explain Lector's subsequent cannibalism unless Lector actually does participate in eating his sister. A thread, again, left unexplored.

Hannibal Rising is an interesting read but only as an action-adventure novel. Lector's experience in this book is almost no different than any 'action hero" except that ultimately he enjoys the killing that he does. As an exploration of Lector's subsequent behaviour as an adult is is lacking. Harris should have read fewer books about post-war France and more books about the development of violent sociopathic behaviour and the book would have been better. That and perhaps develop some detachment from the Lector character to allow him to explore the development of Lector more realistically.

Winterguard army

Jamie came over Thursday might and we both tried out new Warmachine casters in our armies. Jamie tried Goreshade with his Cryx force and I tried Vlad. For the first time I might add. In addition I also added the Wingetguard UA and WA as well as Kell Balloch.

Jamie's Cryx force was a horde of troops (Revenant crew, McThralls, Bile Thralls, Bloat Thrall and two Pistol Wraiths) with only two bonejacks. My Khador army had the typical Destroyer and Juggernaut and then a full Winteguard unit with the UA and WA. I added Kell Balloch to this army.

Kell once again made back his points by sniping the Revenant Quartermaster in the first turn. The Winterguard UA really transforms the unit. The Grapeshot ability is incredible against a horde or Cryx troops and the hasten ability combined with the grapeshot makes it easy to strip troops from a unit before they charge.

This was also the first game with Vlad and I found him to be a lot simpler to use than Sorcha. Blood of Kings turns him into a melee beast and Signs and Portents makes the army far more effective and saves you having to spend focus to boost 7+ to hit rolls in order to increase your odds of hitting.

All in all a fun game even with both Jamie and myself making some "beginner" mistakes using these new Warcasters.

Rocketeer and Kell Balloch

Pawel came over last night with his Menoth army and I managed to get my first game in using the Khador Rocketeer and Kell Balloch. The Rocketeer was caught in a Sandblast spell and wiped out before it could really do anything but Kell was amazing. He took out four Zealots and four Knights Errant on his own. Mind you, he was almost taken out by a single mis-tossed Zealot grenade as well so while he is quite good at shooting he can be removed almost casually.

Hopefully I will be able to get another game in tonight as I have assemble the Winterguard UA and Vlad. Especially since most of them appear to be decidedly similar to one another. Not any fault on the part of players really, its just that there are some very good American units and you'd be quite daft not to take them.

Zach recently picked up Americans as well and much to my horror has picked a Mechanised Rifle Company.

Maybe I can convince him to field them as an infantry company?

On the plus side I am actually quite intrigued by the Festung Europa book. I've started writing some scenarios, ordered the minis and need to get a few terrain elements put together.

The rules I am going to be using are the .45 Adventure rules with the Amazing War Stories expansion from Ratttrap Productions.

I've also been reading the Ravenor titles by Dan Abnett which has actually got me thinking about using the .45 Adventure rules and the upcoming sci-fi expansion for those rules to create Inquisitor adventures based in the 40K universe.

Combined with the upcoming 40K RPG rulebook there might be enough material being produced to port stats over to the .45 Adventure framework and then game using those rules.

I'm quite excited about the idea. I have a large collection of Inquisitorial miniatures as well as "villians" from when I was writing an Inquisitorial "gang" for Necromunda. So once the rules come out and the RPG background is available I'll be eagering getting down to having running gun fights with my Inquisitors.

Hordes Miniatures

Some Hordes minis that will be on sale at the Garage Sale on Sat. To be honest its a single Hordes miniature, another Woldwatcher to replace the Warpwolf in my non-Kaya Circle forces. The rest of the pile is new Menoth miniatures to expand the Menoth miniatures I added quite recently.

The recent haul is:

Redeemer

Devout

Zealot boxed set

Flameguard boxed set

Zealot Monolith Bearer

I also picked up another Senescahl to use to convert a leader for the second unit of Knights Exemplar. So I should be able to table both of those once I get them rebased. So I've now got more than enough minis to build a 500pt force.

Mind you in my urge to get troops etc I failed to pick up a Feora miniature. So I currently only have Kreoss.

Update: Well the stack of minis just got even more ridiculous. Quite some time ago I did some writing for Fanatic Magazine and only recently got off my ass to arrange to get paid. Andy at SG asked if I minded getting paid in minis instead of cash, as if there was really any doubt as to the answer.

I have, for some time, been very impressed with the Vostroyan minis that they released for 40K and so I got a stack of those as well as some minis to expand my 40K Orc army. So I have to add three boxed sets and close to 16 blisters of minis to the total of new figs coming in the door this weekend.

I think I need to have a garage sale to get rid of some of my older minis to make space for the new ones.

Federation Commander

Had an opportunity to play another game of Federation Commander last night at the monthly Trumpeter's Friday Game Night. Had quite a lot of fun and am really starting to take a shine to this game. Despite not having a real firm grasp of the rules we were able to get a two player Duel game done in a few hours and there was not really any time I wasn't quite involved in the game.

In order to keep the game simple we played a cruiser and frigate each and I took the Klingons. The game was going quite well until my opponent, Andrew, managed to hit my D7C cruiser with two Photon torpedo volleys and eliminate all but one Disruptor on the Klingon cruiser. Weapons I had forgone firing since I wanted to get in closer to maximise my chances to hit with overloaded Disruptors. Curses!

Luckily I was able to overcome this early setback and still take the game but quite a lot of that had to do with some late game dice luck (or lack of it) as Andrew missed with Photons at a critical point.

One issue that I really didn't notice before was the change in the game that is bought about but having the offensive and Defensive Fire phases placed after four possible sub-impulses of movement. You tend to move slightly more than you think before being able to fire and also have fewer opportunities to take out Drones at a distance.

All in all it was a fun game and I am looking forward to playing the game again soon.

Romans and wrecks

Work has let up a bit so I have had some time to work on a few projects. The last of the Republican Romans for the first 1000 points of my Warmaster Ancients army are almost done. The troops stands are done and I just finished painting the command stands. They are currently drying after their coat of Vallejo Flat Earth on the bases and then I will finishing flocking them later today.

As well I have finally gotten around to creating some wreck markers for Warmachine. Three large bases and two medium bases even though my Khador army doesn't have any Light Warjacks. all of the markers were assembled from a Khador Destroyer and some random parts from on old 40K Orc Deth Kopta. I'll be painting those today as well if I have time and will be posting some pictures of them.

In order to fill out the bases I used some of the Vallejo Pumice that I purchased recently. I tried it with some Urban bases I did and wasn't thrilled with it. So it will be interesting to see how well it works on these markers.

Republican Romans

Part of the problem about running TGN (other than the time it requires) is that since I write about gaming every day I don't update my blog as often as I would like. I'm still gaming as often as I used to but I just don't find the time to write about it as frequently.

The last few days have been spent getting the first 1000 points of my Republican Roman Warmaster Ancients army ready for a gaming event this Friday. The army is technically illegal as it requires two units of Heavy Cavalry to bring me up to 1000 points and I also only painted three units of Legion troops. Not sure why that happened.

Brian gave me some lightly armoured spearmen with shields that were sent to him in a Baccus order by mistake and I think that I will be using those as my Italian Allies instead of the troops that Baccus provided. If only to provide some visual interest but also to make it very clear which units are Allies and which are Legion units. I'm just working on the general and Tribune stands now and once those are done I will take some pictures and post them. I'll also take some pictures of the games on Friday and post those as well.

Krueger and Circle tokens

Jamie popped in last night for a Warmchine v. Hordes game bringing his Skarre Thrall army to take on my Circle force, now lead by the newly acquired Krueger miniature.

I don't have a lot of experience playing against Skarre (I do now :-) and I have to say that I really did underestimate the impact of her spells. Its often quite easy to forget just how much damage a Cryx caster can deal especially when using Bonejacks to arc-node spells at you. The Skarre-bomb is also really damn effective and I think that if I had been using Skarre instead of Deneghra then I might still be playing Cryx.

The two games we played allowed me to try out Krueger as well as try out the new plastic Hordes tokens that Privateer Press is producing. I picked up a set (well one of the PP staffers quite nicely gave up theirs) while In Bellevue and wanted to see how they worked.

The Tokens
As you may have read online Privateer Press has not licensed any of the Hordes IP to Gale Force 9 for them to create tokens similar to the ones they create for Warmachine. Instead Privateer Press has created small plastic Fury markers and round holders for cardboard counters that are then inserted into the holders. The Fury markers and the counter holders are a translucent green plastic with small curved barbs around the edges. In fact the Fury markers are actually rather sharp.

The immediate issue with them is that they do appear "cheap" in comparison to the GF9 counters. Which really is be expected since you're getting a hell of a lot more tokens for the price. The packs contain all of the fury and effect tokens you'll need for all of a faction's units from Primal so you're getting the functional equivalent of four or perhaps five packs of GF9 tokens for the price of one pack of GF9 tokens. Obviously then you're not going to get laser cut plastic tokens backed with felt for this price. So in terms of quality of materials they don't compare to the GF9 products.

Where I think they have an obvious advantage, aside from price, is that there are graphic differences, either colour or design, between the various effect tokens and so its easier to gauge when a unit has different animus or spells on it. The one issue I do have with the GF9 tokens is that they are visually quite similar and often there is no easy way to see exactly what spell effect(s) are one a unit other than leaning over and ready the token.

This certainly won't disappear with these PP produced tokens but with the various coloured backgrounds for the effect tokens its going to be easier to see a difference.

In the game the tokens did their job and did it quite well. They marked spell effects and marked fury on Warbeasts and at no point did I really have to give them a second thought. They work well at the task they are meant to perform and the only real issue surrounding them is that they aren't made to the same quality as the GF9 tokens.

But for the cost of a pack of GF9 tokens you get all the tokens you need for all the units in your faction so its really difficult to not like them.

Game One
The first game started off well for me. I was able to eliminate one of this Bonejacks quite quickly with the Woldwarden and took out some thralls with spells. I also managed to gauge the distance between the Bile Thralls and my Wolves well and so tey were saved a second turn purging. Krueger's Wind Storm spell was helpful in that it kept the Wolves safe from a few shots from the Bile Thralls.

The game could have been over quite quickly and would have ended in the second turn if Jamie hadn't missed with a second Hellfire spell. Skarre typically oozes Focus after the first turn and between the Skarre-bomb and Hellfire Krueger was knocked down to four health and his long term prospects weren't looking too good.

Luckily was I was able to knock a hole in the unit of Mechani-thralls covering her and charge in a warpwolf who managed to take her down.

The one bright point in the game for me was that my Totem Hunter was able to Leap in to attack the Bloat Thrall and take it out. I think its the first Totem that the unit has harvested in the entire time I have used it.

Game Two
The second game looked quite ugly from the onset as I used Krueger's feat to eliminate both Jamie's Bile Thralls and Mechani-thralls. Jamie thought the game looked a little bleak but I think that was based on his relative inexperience with the game. The thralls are chaff and he still had his caster and jacks and so was in a much better position than he thought. I tried to press the advantage but due to some spectacularly bad dice rolling on my part and some effective spell casting on his part he was able to take Krueger down and win the game.

it was a pretty typical Warmachine game in which an initial heavy hit still wasn't enough to take down the caster and their army and its one of the reasons why I think Warmachine/Hordes is such a good game. You can usually at least come up with a plan to try to reverse your situation even if you take a lot of initial damage.

Krueger
Krueger is an interesting Warlock. His feat is a little unusual in that its very offensive and it seems as if it needs to be cast early to take out covering units or threatening infantry. It sure will knock a hole in anyone trying to do a Haley Turtle defense. Unlike Baldur he seems a bit more straight-forward to play and I am thinking of replacing the Warpwolf with a second Woldwarden to be able to cast three Forked Lightning spells a turn.

All in all a successful first outing with Krueger and a positive experience with the new Privateer Press tokens as well.

Book Meme

Well its only fair that Maksim tags me with this meme as I did the same to him quite some time ago with another similar blog-meme. Since he posted this on the 15th its also a bit of a slap on the wrist for me to keep up to date with my blog reading.

Name one book that changed your life:
World of Ptavvs by Larry Niven. This is perhaps the first sci-fi novel that I read that made me aware of the power not only of my own imagination but also in a book and writer's ability to transcend reality and take you to a place that doesn't exist and explore ideas. Niven's early work is often a mental sandbox from which he exercises utterly outlandish concepts. Its easy for me to still recall the sense of awe that I felt when first reading this book.

One book you've read more than once:
There are quite a few books that would fit into this category but The Illuminatus Trilogy is probably the only book that I have not only reread but reread in several formats. Its a wonderful book for many reasons but mostly, to my mind, for its ability to make you doubt your own reality. The book spends hundreds of pages to build up a baroque conspiracy and then demolishes it in a few paragraphs.

One book that made you laugh:
Anything by Terry Pratchett but I am especially fond of his work with Neil Gaiman on Good Omens. I'm lucky enough to have a paperback copy of the book that has been signed by both authors using a special autograph they designed specifically for the book. The running gag with the BBC Gardening show is classic.

One book that made you cry:
Nothing since I was young and then it was one of the ubiquitous "animal-friend dies in chapter 12" books that seem to be popular with people in elementary school or at least popular with elementary school teachers.

One book you're currently reading:
Eon by Greg Bear and a history of the Punic Wars that has made such a monumental impression on me that I can't be arsed to even get up and read the title. It would be nice if someone could write an interesting history of that period. Maybe something with maps as well?

One book you wish you'd written:
Gödel, Escher, Bach by Douglas Hofstadter if only because it must be fun to be that frikin' smart.

One book you wish had never been written:
Anything by Ayn Rand. A series of books that provide an epistemological excuse for being a self-absorbed cunt.

One book you'd want on a desert island:
Well if it was a deliberate trip onto a desert island then I'd probably want to take Unpopular Essays by Bertrand Russell as it is a book teh requires some time to contemplate and I'd hope that a desert island would provide me with the required space, quiet and time to do so.

One book you've been meaning to read:
Dark Age Ahead by Jane Jacobs. A fascinating work by a fascinating scholar but I can never bring myself to finish it as it confirms all my worst opinions about North American culture.

Other people I am tagging
Stu
Hyun
A third pick to be determined at a later date
